Horizon Educational Trust holds an annual mathematics competition which is known as the Horizon Mathematics Competition.
Since 2000, Horizon Educational Trust’s Schools (Star Colleges in Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and in Johannesburg) have invited surrounding schools in the community to participate in this competition.
Learners from
grades 5, 6 and 7 are invited to the competition.
Outstanding prizes are offered to the top students to encourage the interest in mathematics.
The
First Round takes place AT YOUR SCHOOL. (DATE TO BE ADVISED, Generally in March).
The
Second (FINAL) Round of HMC is held on at Star Colleges or designated alternatives in your area. (DATE: 2nd Saturday of May).
The exam consists of
30 multiple-choice questions, worded in English, and participants will have 75 minutes to answer these questions. Please note that all participating grades will write the same exam, because this competition is to encourage learners to have fun and try in the field of mathematics, and allow those learners with a gift to shine through.
Aim of HMC:It is observed by many concerned educators that the interest of learners in science and mathematics is not at the desired level. This directly affects the level of science and mathematical literacy of the learners and the citizens in the big picture.
We believe that encouragement is an important tool to spark this interest and it may be helpful to host a mathematics competition for primary school learners who are still at the early stages of their formal schooling and to offer them attractive prizes.
Our aim is to reach as many individual students, irrespective of their race, creed and social or financial background. We strive to make an impact on the individual child to leave an impact on the excitement of Mathematics. Encouragement of learners, in turn encourages the schools to start a Mathematics team and teach beyond the borders of classroom syllabus.
“It is the tradition of realization of one’s self, for mathematics, in mathematics.”
With that we are hoping to teach, as many young minds as we can, how to catch fish through mathematics and mathematical sciences. We are hoping to help young mind to do something similar to finding the fact that massive celestial objects bend the space with the only help of mathematics. Or something similar to the existence of black holes only with the help of mathematics, as well as the existence of white holes or help economists understand the paradox and turbulence of stock exchange by the help of an equation.
In a nutshell, our dream is to help those young minds use mathematics, and understand the nature of universe through such a powerful and versatile universal language.
