STAR COLLEGE held the annual Horizon Mathematics Awards Ceremony on the 31 May 2014. This day commemorated the top achievers in the Horizon Mathematics Competition and to acknowledge them for their exceptional mathematical ability.
The competition was initiated this competition in 2002 and has been running successfully each year. This years competition followed a 2 round formulae. The first round took place at the individual schools. The top students who made 50% or above from each school were then invited through to the 2nd round at Star College in Westville. The second round of HMC consisted of a multiple choice questionnaire and the participants had 75 mins to complete the test.

The first round accommodated over 4000 students, from approx 59 school, which lead to the second round of over 1200 students being eligible to write. Students from 33 schools in the second round from grade 5, 6 and 7 were successful reaching the Top 200. All of the top 200 students received a certificate and token for their achievement sponsored by Gem Sports and Alert Stationers, the Top 50 learners also received a stylish HMC “Mathletes Tshirt”. The first student of each grade received a MATHS DICTIONARY SPONSORED BY ADAMS and a board game.

Over and above these prizes AWARDS for the top 3 schools whose learners achieved the Top 3 positions and the Overall School Achiever Trophy was awarded. The top learners were:

Lloyd was also the TOP learner in Grade 6! Lloyd was the Top grade 5 learner in 2013.

It was an extremely close call this year with Nicolas and Ethan. Ethan achieved 15st place last year and was one of the top Gr 6 learners. Nicholas came 13th last year and was also one of the high achieving grade 6 learners in 2013.

This event is not only representative of the winners from KZN.

The Horizon Maths Competition is a national competition. This year over 23,000…. Learners entered the Horizon Maths Competition from Pretoria, Cape Town , Johannesburg and Durban. Cape Town came in 3rd place, KZN in 2nd Place and KZN in 1st Place !

This means that NICOLAS HARDMAN was THE TOP ACHIEVER NATIONALLY and in second place nationally is ETHAN BUCHANAN!!!
Top educators awards were handed to MRS SIBSON FROM MANOR GARDENS and MRS TARRYN LOCKE FROM GLENWOOD PREP for their dedication to Maths.

Our First Place final award for the competition went to the school which had achieved exceptionally in the Overall placement. This is the school which had achieved the most numbers of learners in the Top 200 combined with the highest achievements. The successful school was MANOR GARDENS!!!
